Read the letters without turning them into stereotypes

Choosing one letter from each pair gives 16 combinations. The framework also considers how preferences interact, beyond this introductory letter comparison. For that next step, see the Foundation’s type-dynamics overview.

An editorial exercise: if a character talks throughout a meeting, write down another context before choosing E. Perhaps they were assigned to chair it. If a character uses a schedule, separate liking a settled plan from needing one for the task. These are prompts for organizing observations, not assessment questions.

Thinking and Feeling: same decision, different reasons

In the MBTI framework, T/F concerns the criteria given weight in a decision: impersonal principles and analysis for Thinking; values and effects on the people involved for Feeling. It does not measure intelligence or emotional intensity. Everyone uses both. Source: the Foundation’s Thinking/Feeling explanation.

An original exercise: two organizers each postpone a workshop. The outcome alone does not reveal what mattered to them. Before opening the example below, think of two reasons for the same decision.

Read the two reasons
  • Organizer A: the practical session needs three instructors, but only two are available. They postpone because the planned program cannot run with that staffing.
  • Organizer B: a newcomer cannot attend. They had promised to begin together and postpone because keeping that commitment matters to them.

A’s explanation centers on operating requirements; B’s centers on a commitment to someone. These illustrate different criteria, not a key for assigning A a T or B an F. The same person could give weight to both reasons.

Change one fact

A third instructor becomes available, but the newcomer still cannot attend. Which reason for postponing has changed, and which remains? If the decisions now differ, explain the criteria before reaching for a type label. In a real story, check whether the dialogue and context support those reasons in the first place.

Is MBTI the same as 16Personalities?

They are different systems. 16Personalities describes its NERIS model as five scales adapted from the Big Five. It uses four-letter codes plus A/T and says it does not use Jungian cognitive functions. A means Assertive and T means Turbulent in its Identity scale. 16Personalities — Our Framework.

The Japan MBTI Association also explains that matching four-letter labels do not make the two results equivalent. Before comparing results, identify which service produced each one. Japan MBTI Association’s explanation (Japanese).

If your result says INFP-T

You can choose INFP here to look up the letters. That does not convert your result into an MBTI assessment result. Keep the service name and complete code together in your notes so a later result is not mistaken for the same measurement.
